M. Maitland DeLand, M.D. is a radiation oncologist in Lafayette, La, and is President, Chief Executive Officer and Owner of OncoLogics, Inc., a group of clinical practices throughout Louisiana. She holds hospital staff appointments at several facilities in the state, including the University Medical Center, Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center and Women and Children's Hospital. She has served on the Tulane Cancer Center Community Advisory Board in New Orleans since 2003 and is a member of the NCI designated cancer consortium in New Orleans.
Dr. DeLand received her B.S. and M.D. from the University of Florida and completed her residency and fellowship in Radiation Oncology at Duke University Medical School. She was awarded an American Cancer Society Clinical Fellowship and is board certified in therapeutic radiology. In 2006 she was recognized with an American College of Radiation Oncology Fellowship and will receive an American College of Radiology Fellowship in 2007.
After watching her patients suffer with radiation dermatitis caused by life-saving radiation therapy for cancer, she recently completed research proving that LED Photomodulation reduces the occurrence and severity of painful dermatitis among her breast cancer patients. In LED Photomodulation, pulsating non-thermal light is directed to the treated area and activates healing cells in the skin, which decreases the enzymes that cause skin breakdown. She presented these results at the American College of Radiation Oncology's (ACRO) 16th annual meeting and the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery's (ASLMS) 26th annual meeting. She has also been invited to present these findings at the 2007 International Master Course of Aging Skin (IMCAS) meeting in Paris.
One of Dr. DeLand's major interests is in quality improvement of medical facilities and the establishment of new programs with medical professionals, specialists, and local hospitals. She is proud to serve on the Breastcancer.org Professional Advisory Board because of its continued dedication to helping women and their families with breast cancer find the best medical resources when they need them.
